The two party system looks weird from Belgium too! We do have a speedbump for new parties in the sense that they need to have a certain (small) percentage of votes before they can get representatives into government and get to participate in debates and such, but new parties sometimes do make it through.
It's the electoral college thing still baffles me the most. I remember being massively confused during the 2000 presidential election about why the guy with the smaller percentage of votes got to be president. The Belgian media was doing all sorts of diagrams trying to explain to people what happened there :D
